Projects with Angora Fibre

Project one: July 2008

I thought it would be fun to document my attempts at making things with the immense amount of fibre that my Angoras produce. After all, that's why Angoras exist ! to create luxurious Angora Fibre .  I  have to admit I have thrown tons of the stuff away.... I hear you spinners shrieking !  Looking at the price of a few grams of Angora spinning Fibre on Ebay, I should really go into business !

Here then is my first attempt to make something Angora :)  Please don't expect it to happen overnight, as time is a premium in my life, but I hope to get something finished for the next product competition at the London show in September 2008.... fingers crossed !  It will be rustic to say the least ;)

Step one clip your bunny

Step two

Using my Drum Carder for the very first time.

Drum Carders are stupid expensive but I have to say it was fun to use and easier, quicker and produces masses of combed fibre.

Having never been shown how to use a Drum Carder I learned from this fab lady on You tube:

Rexenne Thank you !

The result 4 batts of Angora Fibre from left to right:

Gold, White, Smoke (Black) and Chocolate.

Total weight is 100g  but I have masses more fibre if need be.

Well I have spun the carded fibre.  Spun as two singles using a handful of white then gold then chocolate and smoke and then plied together.

I bought my wheel on Ebay for £70 !  bargain... it is an Ashford Traditional

On my third batch now as the first didn't go as far as expected. Once washed the yarn has a lovely feel and weight to it. Here is the 2nd batch skeined and washed

The colours all merge together in different combinations giving a really colourful yarn.  Knitted up it almost has a luminescent quality to it. I cant show you the piece until after the London show at the beginning of September, when it will make it's debut :)

I taught myself to kniit from videos on this site.

www.knittinghelp.com

It's a great site and it's free !  Go on have a go , you know you want to.  It's cheap and easy !  I've now met tons of blokes that knit, on forums, so I don't feel quite so weird LOL. Not that being weird has ever bothered me !

Here it is the first thing I have handspun and made from my own Angora !  Ok it's a bit rustic but I am pretty proud of it :)

Results now in

My very first entry in the Angora club Products competition held at the London show September 2008 won 1st beginner entry and 2nd in the overall products competition !  wow !

Now I will have to think what I am going to make next :)
