NEWS 2011
The London @
the East of England is coming......
Simon
Whincup (General Secretary) introduces the 2011 London
Championship show sponsored by Supreme Petfoods at it’s new
venue of the East of England showground, the new and
exciting home of ‘The London’.
It’s only a few months till the London
championship show arrives in the East of England showground,
on the 8th and 9th October 2011, and the London are very
excited at the prospect of the move. The plans are well
underway, and as the year progresses we will report on what
is coming up in the London 2011. Remember, the London is one
of the UK’s premier five star championship events for
rabbits, cavies and small livestock.
Accommodation
The main question we continue to be asked
is about hotels and accommodation. Unfortunately, this year
we couldn’t get a deal organised soon enough on the hotels,
but this is definitely our plan for 2012. However, if you
haven’t sorted your accommodation already, then here is a

That out of the way, and so now here are
some headlines for the 2011 event....
Significant Prize Monies on offer
Our sponsors Supreme Petfoods are being
very supportive to the London and our supporters (you the
exhibitors), and are offering up to £5000 in prize money on
top of the usual prize money that is offered by the London.
This includes £1000 for the BiS Rabbit; and £500 for the BiS
Cavy; as well as £50 BiS for all other species. The juniors
aren’t left out neither, with significant cash prizes on
offer across all species. The prize money in the rabbits
will also be split to offer significant prizes for Best of
Breeds, Best in Sections and in the Cavies for Best opposite
and Best Rare Variety. This really does make the London a
real opportunity all concerned this year to finally get
something back out of their hobby. Our sponsors Chief
Executive Officer, Alan Walmsley said "quote from Alan
(will forward in next day or so)"
The Best in Show
In the rabbits, this year our best in show
judge is a man who will be known to many in the North of
England and also to those who attend the Bradford
Championship Show. This years BiS judge is none other than
the king of Dwarfs, Mr Tom Stratford. Tom has been in the
rabbit fancy for many years and been involved at all levels.
Tom was delighted to accept the engagement and wrote the
most fantastic letter accepting his engagement. Remember
£1000 is on offer for the best rabbit in show.
In the cavies, this year our best in show
judge is David Oulton MRCVS. David showing as Cheshire Stud,
one of the UK’s leading studs of Pink Eyed Golden cavies
since 1964. David is now the secretary of the English Self
Cavy Club, and is a well known judge and breeder on the cavy
circuit. David will undoubtedly enjoy the judging experience
at London. Remember £500 is on offer for the best cavy in
show.
For 2011, the BiS events will all be on
the same stage, this comes as the London moves to merge it’s
show closer together and bringing all sections to a more
integrated state. Therefore, both our BiS judges will take
to the main stage to judge their respective BiS.
The Cavy
section moves to two days
The cavy section moves to two days from
2011, under the excellent charge of Jayne Crick. Jayne is
secretary of the Peruvian Club and Loughborough Cavy Club.
Many will know Jayne and her mother Betty Crick who is the
Cavy section manager at the Bradford Championship Show. On
the Sunday of the London as well, we will be hosting the
National Cavy Club championship which moves from its current
location of the Oswestry Showground. This is an excellent
opportunity for the London, and a real privilege to be so
closely integrated with the main cavy club in the UK.
Rabbit Section
judges
The rabbit section challenge judges for
2011 are, Mr Glen Hodson (Fancy), Mr Phil Batey (Lops), Mr
Ray Everett (Fur), Mr Arnie Hill (Rex).
A new life
president
The last life president that the London
had was the late Rene Bareham. Many fanciers of today won’t
even remember Rene Bareham, and may never have heard of her.
However, Rene was a real staunch worker for the London and
supporter for many years. Following a period of many years
without the post being filled, the London committee recently
decided that it was now time to fill that post, and the
right person had come to our attention. That person is
Patricia Gaskin of Fur and Feather. Pat is the founder of
the London Championship Show, and the London was born out of
Pat’s vision and her love of the small animal fancy. Pat has
been a strong supporter of the London for many many years,
and currently serves as a life patron of the society.
However, there was no better person to take the helm as Life
President than Pat. We are very pleased to welcome Pat to
the London as our life president. Upon hearing the news, Pat
said "I feel so proud and happy to be part of the London
team and I do wish the 2011 show every success. Eric, and of
course dear Rene, would be so thrilled."
Our 2011 Annual
President
The London’s 2011 annual president is Ann
Storey MSc. Ann is a well know rat fancier, and is the
president of the National Fancy Rat Society (NFRS). Ann is a
well written author for numerous publications including Fur
and Feather. Ann is also a previous committee member of the
London Championship Show.
The Social
As we move to a new venue, our social
moves with us. We are well aware that in the last few years
in particular, the social at the London has become less of a
popular event than it once used to be. To that end, the
London committee are now working to arrange a fabulous
social event for you the fanciers. We are seeking to put
together an event that will provide food (if possible), a
number of events in one, an event for all age groups and for
all spectrums of the small animal fancy. More news will
follow in future issues as we progress, a number of plans
are on the drawing board lets see what we come out with.
Club Stands for
2011
For 2011, the London are just finalising
the prices for club stands. These will be published in the
next coverage. This is a fabulous opportunity to promote
your breeds/varieties to an excellent shop window through
the public that will be visiting the London, and really
can’t be overlooked. We must emphasise however that there
can be no commercial products served from the club stand, as
this would classify as a trade stand. Purely membership and
any club sundries are allowed for sale.
Trade Stands
for 2011
From this year, the London can no longer
be responsible for trade stands. From now on, if you wish to
have a trade stand at the event, you must book through the
East of England Showground and pay their rates for trade
stands. The showground are contactable on 01733 234451, or
email kbuttriss@eastofengland.org.uk .
What changes
for 2011
There are a number of things which will
improve and change for 2011, however the one thing that
won’t change is the entry fee for rabbit exhibitors. The
entry fee for rabbits has been at £6.50 block since 2005
now, and 2011 will be no different. The entry fee remains at
£6.50 block.
Our cavy section has however increased
it’s entry fee slightly to £6.50 block as well for 2011.
This comes in line with other championship shows across the
UK.
Our small livestock sections are unlikely
to change significantly; this will be updated if changes are
made.
Membership
package returns in 2011
The London hasn’t had a membership package
for some years now, however for 2011 we have decided to
return the membership rate. The membership will be charged
at £5 for all age groups. For £5 you receive the following:
Membership badge;
Some Discounts apply during the show
Entry into speciality classes
To join the London and get your
membership, either enter on your entry form in the middle of
the year or contact one of the section secretaries.
So thats it for now.....
